Relationship as a spiritual practice
For the last 6 1/2 years, my partnership has been my greatest spiritual practice.
And I'm well-versed in spiritual practice!
I've practiced yoga since I was 24.
Meditated since I was 28.
I’ve deeply studied the nature of our universe and modern mysticism since I was 28.
I've prayed/ visioned/ danced/ journaled/ forest-walked since I was… oh gosh… 2 or 32, whether you want to say formally or informally
I've passionately sought to know this thing called God through multiple religions & spiritual teachings, and ultimately through my own experiences.
And yet, nothing has come close to the all-consuming alchemy that is sacred partnership!
It’s wild. I would have bucked against this if I were 34 and reading someone else write these words. But, in my experience, it’s true!
6 1/2 years in and I've seen shadow aspects of myself that the longest medicine journey has not been able to excavate. I've witnessed healings within myself that no amount of meditation or therapy has provided. And I've liberated my truest, most authentic self, free from the deepest of my childhood wounds.
All because we made a conscious choice to use our relationship as a vehicle of healing & liberation.
I've had to learn to stay in my body, stay in the room, stay in the conversation… even when every wound inside of me tells me to hide away.
I've learned to bare my bleeding, aching heart, even when it makes me tremble with fear.
I've learned to courageously point to my inner mess, and say, “Here it is! This thing I've hidden away for my entire life. This is mine to own, behold how filthy and frail my naked human-ness is!”
And I've learned that I am LOVABLE for all of it! ALL OF IT!
I've come to understand the love of God through the love of my partner. To bare it all, to risk losing it all, and yet to be loved through it all.
It is the holiest of things!
